The opportunity

Europe's upstream is drilling again — under new rules.

MOL is actively exploring across Central & Eastern Europe — including a new oil discovery in Western Hungary in 2025 — while Shape Tomorrow 2030+ raises the bar on emissions, logistics, and social licence. The rigs that win here are clean, compliant, and instantly mobile.

FOOTPRINT

E&P in 9 countries

~90.4 mboepd (2023). Active production across CEE, the Caucasus and beyond — Hungary, Croatia, Romania at the core.

MOMENTUM

New discovery, Western Hungary

A 2025 onshore oil discovery — fresh drilling and workover activity on European soil, right now.

MANDATE

Shape Tomorrow 2030+

An explicit decarbonisation and energy-transition strategy — pressure on Scope 1 emissions and operating footprint.

The field problem

Most rigs weren't built for European conditions.

01

Abnormal loads

Heavy, oversized rigs need permits, escorts and route planning to cross European roads.

02

Diesel & emissions

Conventional power runs against decarbonisation targets and tightening EU environmental rules.

03

Slow rig-up

Guy ropes and long mobilisation burn days per move — and days are wells.

04

Compliance risk

ATEX and EU regulatory gaps add approval time and risk before a rig can even spud.

European E&P needs a package that moves in-gauge, runs far cleaner, and is compliant out of the box.

Introducing XDR

Australian-engineered.
Field-proven. Europe-ready.

XDR — Exploration Drill Rigs — has designed and built workover rigs since 2007, with a dedicated engineering and manufacturing base. The Electric Workover Rig Package is trailer-mounted, rapid to rig up, and fully electric — rig, catwalk and mud trailer as one integrated system.

  • 550 kW electric drive — diesel-class power, far lower emissions
  • 160,000 lb lift · 12,500 ft-lb rotary torque
  • Road-gauge compliant — transports across the EU, no escorts or permits
  • Zone 1 certified — IECEx / ATEX components
  • No guy lines — setup & pack-up in approx. 30 min (vs 120 conventional)

Why it fits Europe

Engineered for Europe, seven ways.

Electric drive

  • Single 550 kW electric motor, VFD-controlled
  • Significantly reduced emissions, low noise, low maintenance
  • Drive motors power down automatically when idle
  • Recovers energy when lowering into the wellbore

Constant-torque power

  • All the power of a diesel, all the time
  • 160,000 lb lift · 12,500 ft-lb torque

European road-gauge

  • Within EU road width & axle regulations — no escorts or permits
  • Steerable tri-axle; minimum loads to site

Zone-rated 1 & 2

  • Zone 1 to 5 m, Zone 2 to 7.5 m — full zone-rated mast
  • IECEx / ATEX certified, anti-static, earth-bonded

PLC safety · approx. 30-min setup

  • Full PLC automation, interlocks & diagnostics
  • Setup in approx. 30 min — vs 120 min conventional

Fast, simple hoisting

  • 80 m/min drawworks hook speed
  • Single wire-rope drill line — no travelling blocks

Lean crew · extremely low maintenance

  • Fully integrated plant — a smaller crew runs the package
  • Few wearing parts + electric drive = extremely low maintenance
Decarbonised drilling

550 kW electric. All the power of a diesel, all the time.

At its heart is a single 550 kW electric motor, VFD-controlled — delivering all the power of a large diesel unit, available all the time, with smooth constant torque across the whole range and significantly reduced emissions, low noise, and extremely low maintenance — a single wire-rope drill line with no travelling blocks means far fewer wearing parts. Drive motors power down automatically when idle, and the system recovers energy when lowering into the wellbore. Well servicing that fits a decarbonisation strategy rather than fighting it.

  • Significantly reduced emissions — supports MOL's Shape Tomorrow 2030+ goals
  • Extremely low maintenance — single wire-rope drill line, no travelling blocks, few wearing parts
  • Fully integrated plant — a smaller, leaner crew runs the whole package
  • Regenerative energy recovery on lowering into the wellbore

Logistics

European road-gauge. Minimum loads. On the road in approximately 30 minutes.

Engineered to European road-gauge — within road width and axle regulations — so it transports across EU member states without escorts or special permits, and mobilises in fewer loads than a conventional package. A steerable tri-axle handles tight, congested well sites, and setup takes approximately 30 minutes versus 120 for a conventional hoist. Across MOL's Hungarian, Croatian and Romanian acreage, that's days saved on every move.

REDUCED LOADS

Minimum loads to site

Mobilises in fewer truckloads — lower transport cost, less road impact, faster set-up.

SETUP

Approx. 30 min

Guy-rope-free mast. Minimal crew, minimal footprint — vs ~120 min conventional.

REDEPLOY

Hours, not days

Move across CEE assets fast — fewer idle days, faster well turnover.

Compliant by design

Built for European zones.

The package is zone-rated for hazardous areas: Zone 1 to a 5 m radius and Zone 2 to 7.5 m, with a full zone-rated mast. All in-zone electronics are IECEx or ATEX certified, sheaves are anti-static, and cylinders are earth-bonded against static discharge. Hazardous-area compliance engineered in — meeting stringent European requirements and de-risking the path from mobilisation to spud.

ZONE-RATED

Zone 1 @ 5 m · Zone 2 @ 7.5 m

Full zone-rated mast; in-zone electronics IECEx / ATEX certified.

STATIC-SAFE

Anti-static & bonded

Anti-static sheaves and earth-bonded cylinders prevent static discharge.

APPROVALS

Less regulatory drag

Hazardous-area compliance built in shortens the route to operating approval.

Engineered for safety

Certified safe. Monitored by Xenon.

Every package is built to SIL2-confirmed safety, achieving SIL3 performance through safety stacking — and runs on XDR Xenon, the rig telemetry and control operating system. It integrates the plant so a smaller crew can run it, streams live telemetry to operators and well owners, logs 12 months of black-box data, and flags maintenance before it bites. SCADA-ready and fully integratable, with a driller HMI customisable to your requirements.

SIL

SIL2 confirmed · SIL3 performance

Achieved through safety stacking; designed to international standards with full SIL analysis.

XENON

SCADA-ready telemetry

Live telemetry & remote diagnostics, 12-month black-box logging, predictive maintenance — integratable into your systems, HMI to your spec.

SAFE BY DESIGN

Protected at every step

Emergency brakes, overpull protection, certified man-riding floor, real-time mast-zone monitoring and controlled mast lowering.

IntelliBeam™ · rig stability monitoring

IntelliBeam™: rollover risk, made visible.

API 4F certifies a mast for vertical and wind loads — but not the lateral side-pull and off-axis forces that quietly shift a rig's centre of gravity and lead to rollover. IntelliBeam™ is XDR's patented stability-monitoring system. Load cells in the support pads under each rear jack leg measure the real load going into the ground; the PLC computes the lateral centre of gravity continuously and shows it on the driller's screen — with normal, caution and "do-not-go-further" zones — so the crew sees instability developing long before it becomes dangerous. Wind effects are already built into the readings.

  • Load-cell grillage beam — live ground-bearing pressure (kPa) & per-leg jack reactions
  • Real-time centre-of-gravity tracking with normal / caution / do-not-go-further zones
  • Watches the rate of COG change — designed to engage the slips and lower the load if limits are exceeded
  • Independent inclinometer confirms the grillage beam is level before setup; every event logged to Xenon's black box
